Fainé will preside the Spanish Federation of Savings Banks

Isidro Fainé, Full Member of the Real Academia de Ciencias Económicas y Financieras (RACEF) and President of the Caixa d’Estalvis i Pensions de Barcelona, was yesterday unanimously elected President of the Spanish Federation of Savings Banks (CECA). Fainé assumes the office with the restructuring of the Spanish financial system and reform of the Law on Guideline Bodies for Savings Bank as his main challenges.

Honorary academy Member Juan Antonio Samaranch passes away in Barcelona

Honorary Member of the Real Academia de Ciencias Económicas y Financieras (RACEF) Juan Antonio Samaranch passes away this afternoon in Barcelona at the age of 89. Appointed a Member in 1995, Samaranch held the office of Honorary President of the International Seminar on sports management EMOS 09 which was hosted by the RACEF during October last.

Juan Antonio Samaranch was, as was Gorbachev or Den Xiao Ping, was a great opener of hermetically sealed regimes in times that were very difficult for freedom; a visionary in practice of concord who spent half of his life aboard an aeroplane in order to open up autocracies to the world by using the universal and magical key of Olympic sport. The history of diplomacy will explain how Samaranch and other pioneers of globalisation challenged the perverse logic of blocks and made bridges in sporting understanding in relations of power where, up until he became President of the Olympic Committee (COI) only took into account the logic of nuclear dissuasion and the cold war.

Manuel Castells, member of the Academic Council of the Library of Congress of the United States

Full Academy Member Manuel Castells has been appointed a member of the Academic Council of the Library of Congress of the United States, the most prestigious in the country. Professor Emeritus for Planning at the University of Berkley, where he taught and did research during 24 years, Castells, in this way joins the consultant body for all relevant academic and research matters of the Washington Library.

Fainé receives the Creu de Sant Jordi {Cross of Saint George}, the maximum award of the Catalan Government.

Isidro Fainé, Full Member of the Real Academia de Ciencias Económicas y Financieras (RACEF), was awarded, the maximum award given by the Catalan Government, with the Creu de Sant Jordi, for his “services to Catalonia in defence of its identity”. The Academy Member will receive the award on the 21st of April at a solemn ceremony.
